Said with a happy belly…
Curly, straight, small, large, bumps, bits - some say ‘imperfect’, we say PERFECT.
Our fruit and veggies look like nature made them, and most importantly TASTE as fresh and delicious as they’re meant to.
Nature knows what’s up. If something’s a bit wonky, we roll with it!
THE APPLE OF OUR EYE
See ya mate. We’re not about that around here. See, we figure nature’s got it covered, and we’re not gonna get in the way of that.
Paper bags are ace. So are cardboard boxes (which we reuse, btw), and reducing plastic wherever we can.
Sustainability is a journey. If we all change 1% at a time we're making progress!
WAVE GOODBYE TO UNNECESSARY PACKAGING
Where it all began…
2016 The seed is planted
Hi! I’m Shereen, and this beautiful community grocer started on my back deck.
Obsessed with good, fresh food, and creating a healthier life for my family, I decided to start sourcing some wholesomely fresh fruit and veggies for our family.
Friends of ours picked up on our great idea, so I started buying in bulk and sharing it around. Simple right?
2017-2019 A bite on the side
It was never meant to be more than a weekly opportunity to enjoy cups of tea and catch ups with friends.
Balancing a third baby, two preschoolers, and working as a paediatric physiotherapist (which I loved!)...that was a decent handful of life in itself.
We’d enjoyed four years of market fresh fruit and vegetables and sharing the good vibes around with 20 families - we loved what we’d created.
2020 Growing…
As lockdown emerged in 2020, a friend asked if I would turn our little collective into a business.
The idea was planted, and a week later, we went into lock down. Naturally (it turns out) I had an ordering platform live in 4 days, and 80 orders in the system within the week.
Once Newcastle resumed a level of normalcy, An Apple A Day found its own rhythm as a steady side hustle.
2021 And growing…
In the second lockdown of 2021, things really went insane. I’m talking orders quadrupling within hours!
Picture fruit and vegetable boxes covering the entire lawn, all while still packing from our back deck in Mayfield and dispatching 240 contactless orders out of a 25 square metre garage space.
With the garage bursting at the seams with apples (and carrots, and lettuces, and beets…), and the yard covered in boxes…we had to go with the flow and keep things growing!
2022 - Now
We’re all in! Full-time and feelin’ just fine.
Along comes 173 Maitland Rd, Tighes Hill - a beautifully bright and airy space, and a solid place in our community!
Now we’re here for the long-term, part of the heart and soul that small business brings to Newcastle.
We provide a connection between you and the source of your food, nutrition for the body and the soul, and, of course, some really good apples.
